I can't believe I'm talking about gender.
There's a lively discussion, with [info]sallytuppence [info]secritcrush and [info]ccfinlay (under "Glass Half Full") running some very introspective (and non-flammatory I must mention) threads about an apparent disparity of gender balance in the authors published in certain magazines.

It reminded me of something an editor at a panel of SwanCon (I forget which one) said about submissions and women.

He spoke of how he'd get stories from female writers, read them, and while the story didn't ring his bell, he enjoyed the writing and invited them to submit other stuff.

Then he'd never hear from them again.

Male writers, when told to submit again, followed up.

So I thought, that was very odd.

When I submitted to Artemis magazine, my story was rejected, but the editor told me that he liked my style and invited me to submit again. I did. He didn't like that story either, but remained open to further submissions.

I must confess I haven't sent him anything lately, but not because of whatever it was that caused all those female writers to stop submitting to the aforementioned editor.

So, Ian Randal Strock, no I haven't died, been discouraged, fallen off the earth or stopped writing. I simply don't have a story with an appropriate theme for you.

Gimmie time. I will come up with one.

Ha. I got an encouraging rejection from Analog a loooooooong time ago, before I'd sold anything anywhere. (I remember the exact wording, since personal rejections were such a novelty at the time: "I rather like your style of writing and suggest that you try me again.")

The problem is, I write almost nothing that could even remotely be considered hard SF.

Anything that could, though, I send to Analog, even though all rejections since then have been "not right for us, thanks."

"Don't like the story, but we love your style, please try again," has to be one of the best kind of rejections.

Not only have they told you what you've done right, but that it's something right that may lead, eventually, to a sale.

The story may change, but style remains.

Of course, we're all suckers for being told, "You got style, kid!" I wish more editors would say that to me.
